Bill In Massachusettes To Criminalize Online Poker Rejected

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

The controversial Massachusetts bill that would allow three resort-style casinos while criminalizing online poker was defeated by a House vote of 106-48 on Thursday. But it turns out that the provision to criminalize internet poker gambling may have played a pivotal role in the bill’s defeat.

Defeating the proposed bill by Governor Deval Patrick, had become the cause celebre for influential House Speaker Salvatore F. DiMasi, who opposed to it both on moral grounds and what he believed were unrealistic estimates of the casinos benefits to the state.

Wednesday, the Massachusetts House Joint Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies voted 10-8 to reject Governor Deval Patrick’s proposed bill to build three casinos and criminalize online poker in the state.

Bill In Massachusettes To Criminalize Playing Of Online Poker

Friday, March 14th, 2008

A hearing on Tuesday, March 18th will discuss a bill introduced by Governor Deval Patrick. The H. 4307 establishes the framework for construction of three casinos in Massachusetts, but at the same time makes playing online poker punishable by up to two years in prison and a $25,000 fine.

H. 4307 is designed to bring revenue and jobs to Massachusetts. With casinos such as Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun nearby, the state finds itself losing potential sources of revenue. The text of the bill reads, “Revenue generated from resort casinos can be used to find critical needs in the commonwealth, including investments and upgrades to roads and bridges, and other important infrastructure.” Atlantic City is just a 350 mile hop from Boston, making for a range of gambling options for Massachusetts residents right now.

At the time of the passing of the UIGEA, the World Trade Organization ruled against the law as a matter of obstructing the free flow of trade as specified in various agreements. The United States responded by working out deals with the affected countries, including the European Union, Japan, and Canada, returning concessions to these countries in exchange for allowing the gambling block to stand.
