Canadian pro Nenad Medic defeated Andy Bloch during heads-up play to win his first WSOP bracelet in the first event of the 2008 World Series of Poker. For his troubles, Medic earned $794,112 for coming in first place in the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold’em World Championship.
This is a pretty stunning achievement as the 2008 WSOP first final table showcased some of the most respected poker players in the world. Aside from Andy Bloch, Medic found himself facing Patrik Antonius, Mike Sexton, Phil Laak, Kathy Liebert and Internet poker legend Mike “SowersUNCC” Sowers. After nine hours of final table play, Medic came out ahead.
In the last hand of heads up play, Bloch raised pre-flop holding a pair of nines. Medic called with 5, 7 of hearts. The board came down 8, 5, 4 giving Medic the flush draw. Bloch bet out, Medic raised and Block pushed all in with his overpair. Medic called and to Bloch’s dismay, he made his flush on the turn. With no help at the river, Bloch found himself in second place with 448,048. Kathy Liebert who started off the final table with only 285,000 in chips ended up in third place earning $306,064. Mike Sexton came in fourth place earning a decent $248,160.
